Since 1959, Contra Costa Civic Theatre has offered on stage classes for all ages. All of the classes and camps are part of the “Live at CCCT” program.

Musical Juniors rehearses an entire show over ten weeks while teaching drama skills including ensemble work, vocal projection, character creation, and choreography.

We start the class with games and improvisation to familiarize students with the story of the script. Students audition for parts and then rehearse the show — one song and scene at a time. Young actors are expected to memorize lines and rehearse musical numbers between classes. CCCT is dedicated to ensuring a positive theatrical learning experience for every student, stressing process, not product.

Classes take place at CCCT Monday afternoons from 4–6 pm and a few additional Saturday mornings. Parents are asked to assist with the productions in one of many categories: costumes, sets, props, publicity, food, set up and strike — no experience necessary.

Musical Juniors is for Ages 7 to 15.

Philosophy

CCCT is dedicated to ensuring a positive theatrical learning experience for every student. CCCT stresses process, not product. We focus on learning about theater and discourage competition. We are here to instill a love of the theatre in every young person and hope that our non-judgmental environment will encourage each student to express his or her full personality.

Session One

Musical: Annie Jr.

Orientation: September 17, 4–5 pm One parent required to attend along with student

First Class: September 24, 4 6 pm

Final Performance: December 14 & 15

Saturday Rehearsals: December 1 & 8, 9 am – Noon

Session Two

(Shows under consideration include Aladdin Jr. & Jungle Book Kids)

Orientation: December 7, 4–5 pm One parent required to attend along with student

First Class: January 14, 4–6 pm

Final Performance: March 21 & 22

Saturday Rehearsals: March 8 & 15, 9 am–Noon

Session Three

(Shows under consideration include Alladin Jr. & Jungle Book Kids.)

Orientation: March 24, 4–5 pm One parent required to attend along with student

First Class: March 31, 4–6 pm

Final Performance: May 30 & 31

Saturday Rehearsals: May 17 & 24, 9 am–Noon

Musical Juniors Director

Nina Meehan has been directing youth through CCCT Drama Camp and after school programs for the past eleven years. When she was in high school, she performed on the CCCT stage. She also directs the Civic Arts Education Jr. Theatre program where she is very proud that her students have won awards at the Broadway Jr. festival twice during her tenure!

In addition to teaching, Nina co-founded Active Arts Theatre for Young Audiences, a nonprofit theatre company dedicated to performing professional shows for children and family audiences. Nina is a performer and storyteller. She has worked with many Bay Area theatre companies including the California Shakespeare Festival, Willows Theatre (Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for the production), the Shotgun Players, and Playhouse West (Dean Goodman Award for supporting actress). Nina holds her BS in Theatre and Education from Northwestern University. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in Nonprofit Administration from University of San Francisco.
